Kafka producer: TimeoutException: Topic not present in metadata after 60000 ms

org.apache.kafka.common.errors.TimeoutExceptionTopic orders not present in metadata after 60000 ms.

The producer waited max.block.ms (60 seconds by default) for metadata about the topic and never got it. The topic does not exist and auto-creation is off, the client cannot reach the brokers, or it lacks permission to describe the topic.

Causes · Fixes · Source

Common causes

  1. The topic does not exist and the brokers do not create topics automatically. How to confirm: kafka-topics --describe --topic <name> reports that the topic does not exist.
  2. The client cannot connect: wrong bootstrap.servers, advertised listeners pointing to an unreachable host, or TLS and SASL settings that do not match. How to confirm: The client log shows connection or authentication errors before the timeout.
  3. ACLs do not allow the client to describe or write the topic. How to confirm: The broker authorizer log records a denied operation for the client principal.

How to fix it

Create the topic, or fix bootstrap.servers and the brokers' advertised.listeners so the client can reach every broker.

Raising the wait only helps when metadata is slow, not missing.
